3 Key Things to Consider before choosing a Baby Carrier
We are fortunate to provide care for a lot of pregnant mothers in the Wellness Centre. A common question we’re asked is “what sort of baby carriers would you recommend?”
There are many different types of baby carriers on the market and it's easy to get completely overwhelmed about which is the right one for your baby. As Chiropractors, we are primarily concerned with the development of the child's spine and joints. If any apparatus inhibits the babies ability to develop and function normally, then we clearly don't recommend it.
Here are a few points to consider before purchasing:
1. The first and most important point is the baby's pelvis to their knee should be supported so that their thighs' sit in an open position- like they are getting a piggy back. Their buttocks will be bearing most of their weight and their thighs will be at right angles or knees above their hips around the parents’ torso. This is the ideal position for normal hip socket alignment and development. You'll know if the carrier isn't right when their legs are dangling down and most of their body weight is supported by their crutch (ouch!) 2. Your baby should always face inwards. This is so their nervous system isn't over stimulated and so they can rest their head on your chest. No one likes a baby who won't go to sleep! It also supports the healthy hip position with knees outwards and allows the natural kyphotic curve of their spine. 3. Chose a carrier with a thick waistband to support your spine. Your hips should carry most of the weight, much like a big backpack. Some brands of Baby Carrier & Wraps that meet the healthy hip guidelines:
