Chiropractic the Well By Design way

Chiropractic is a very diverse profession, while we've always been perceived as back crackers and bone crunchers (For the record you only crack eggs), our practices and techniques are varied and many. Traditionally chiropractic adjustments were of a manual variety and more forceful, but today they have evolved into more gentle approaches to body work, involving soft tissue/muscle therapy, the use of equipment and instruments and prescription of stretches and exercises to get the very best out of your body. At Well By Design we prefer to us a variety of techniques revolving around the more gentle approach of Sacro Occipital technique (SOT).

So what is SOT? This is where it gets a bit technical... Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) is a specialised, comprehensive, gentle and innovative technique of Chiropractic. It is so named because of the relationship between the sacrum (base of the spine) and the occiput (base of the skull).

One of the functions of the sacrum is to pump Cerebro-Spinal Fluid (CSF) from the base of the spine back up the spinal canal to the brain and throughout the nervous system (essential to life). The occiput also helps to pump CSF. The minute rhythmical motion that circulates the CSF is essential to health – CSF effectively acts as the circulatory system of the brain and spinal cord, so its just as vital as the Cardiovascular system.

The pelvis forms the foundational support of the human skeleton. It supports the upper body right up to the skull, and enables us to transfer our weight to our legs. The spine holds our body upright, supports all of our organs and provides anchor points for our muscles. It also protects our delicate nervous system. The nervous system controls our body, and can only function normally when our structures are balanced and our pelvis is stable.

This is what SOT aims to achieve, so if you've ever wondered why we use the pelvic blocks to balance you out this is the answer, its both important and essential.

In more technical terms, restoration or maintenance of health is accomplished through specialised integrated procedures including functional neurology and biomechanics, nutrition, soft tissue techniques and the diagnosis and treatment of the craniosacral respiratory mechanism (CSRM).

The techniques utilised in SOT promote optimal healing mechanics for the spine, pelvis, cranium(skull), organs, extremities, nervous system, brain and muscles. These techniques promote balance, neurological integrity and integrated function of the organ structure and neurological mechanism.

Well thats a mouthful, put simply .. when your body is a state of balance both structurally and functionally you are in a state of optimal health. SOT is a excellent gentle and effective technique suitable for all members of the family and all ages. So if you've ever wondered what we do during an adjustment, just ask, we're only to happy to explain and if you had to explain chiropractic to a friends or family, then the best and most accurate explanation would be "I get adjusted regularly because I want to feel and move better!".
