Baby walkers have been around since the 1800s, and while they might seem like a helpful tool for curious little ones, research continues to show that they can do more harm than good.

Designed to support babies who can’t yet walk independently, these devices allow movement from place to place — often before their bodies are ready. Many of us grew up using them, but with what we now know about spinal and neurological development, it’s time to rethink their place in early childhood.

How Baby Walkers Affect Development

During the first year of life, a baby’s spine, muscles, and nervous system are developing rapidly. Every stage — from rolling and crawling to standing and walking — plays a crucial role in building strength, coordination, and balance.

When babies spend time in a walker, they’re placed in an upright position before their muscles and joints are ready to support that weight. This can lead to:

  • Abnormal walking patterns or delayed walking milestones

  • Reduced crawling time, which is key for brain and motor development

  • Strain on the spine and hips, affecting long-term posture and coordination

The Risks Go Beyond Development

Aside from developmental concerns, baby walkers are also a leading cause of injury in young children. Studies have shown that one in three infants who use walkers sustain significant injuries such as skull fractures, concussions, or even spinal damage.

Even with improved safety standards, walkers can still allow babies to move quickly toward stairs, pools, or sharp objects before parents have time to react.

The Healthier Alternatives

Instead of a walker, floor-based play is best. Encourage your baby to:

  • Spend plenty of time on their tummy to build neck and core strength

  • Practice rolling, sitting, and crawling freely on the floor

  • Use stationary activity centres that allow safe exploration without premature standing

These natural stages help babies develop strength and coordination safely — supporting both their spine and nervous system as they grow.
